Valerie Proves Them WrongIn 1986, Valerie and Eddie Van Halen celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, but from the beginning, the couple had to live with the rumors in the tabloids that their marriage was troubled. Her husband is a rock star and the headlines screamed out allegations of sex, drugs, and infidelity. Her mother says Valerie is still quite angry when there's a story that's not very nice and she gets very angry. Another says lots of times it does hurt her, because it's completely untrue and very unfair, but he thinks she's learned over the years that she has to just brush it off. Valerie laughs and says it's one of the reasons she and Ed stayed together for so long. But some of their troubles were very real. The couple was dealing with Eddie's addiction to alcohol and trying to do it as privately as possible, and it is a real hard habit to get out of. Although the couple separated several times, family and friends say that Valerie was determined to make her marriage work. Valerie says had she and Ed not gotten married so young, they probably would have given up a long time ago, but because she thinks they were married then they better make this work. Ed says they married through thick and thin, he doesn't know which was the good of the two, but you go through life together and you're gonna have problems and the bottom line is communicating. For better, for worse, vows Valerie and Eddie have taken to heart. These were tough times for the couple. Valerie had suffered a miscarriage, but decided not to attempt the family again until Eddie conquered his drinking. Valerie says the miscarriage was devastating when it happened, but it wasn't what the tabloids made it out to be, it was something terrible and very sad to go through, but people misinterpret by thinking that she had a hard time getting pregnant, and she didn't have Wolfie until 10 years after they got married, there is a reason for that, she was living with an alcoholic and she wasn't going to bring a baby into that. Although Valerie could offer love and moral support, she knew it was up to Eddie to kick his addiction, and when he was truly ready, he did. Eddie says he went to rehab twice but did it for all the wrong reasons and it had to come from within, and he had to want to quit. With Eddie's drinking behind him, Valerie was free to enjoy her successful career and to once again, think about the things she wanted most in life: a child.
