Valerie Back At The Series GrindThen in the fall of 1993, Valerie would star in another TV series "Cafe Americain", this time on NBC, but being placed on a Saturday night, not many viewers watched. Her husband Eddie Van Halen made a brief cameo in the opening segment of the show. He played a street musician that wanders in to the cafe where Val works. As he's "annoying" the customers, Val yells at him to leave and he replies back in Dutch. If you watch Val closely, you can see she's trying hard to keep a straight face, but doesn't do too good of a job. She leads Ed out of the Cafe by the ear, I guess, while Holly (Valerie's character), she says something like "And get some guitar lessons!"That's not the first time Valerie took a shot at Van Halen. In "Sydney", her character is rummaging through some records, comes across a Van Halen album, says "How about some Van Halen?", then she says "Nah!" as she was tossing it away. The audience got the inside joke. During that season, she starred in Murder of Innocence (Nov 30, 1993), which didn't do well opposite ABC's powerhouse lineup. IMHO, this movie left me sick to my stomach and I just about quit watching Valerie's movies for a while after that. That same season, Susan Lucci's character got killed in another TV movie and I just said "enough" already. In Jan 1994, "Cafe" was moved opposite "Coach", and after three weeks, Cafe was gone from the lineup, to be burned off during the summer in May. Several facts were taken off the Lifetime "Intimate Portrait" of Valerie Bertinelli with added facts from "The Complete Directory To Prime Time Network Shows" by Tim Brooks. |
