Two Mothers For ZacharyAnother well-received TV movie she did in 1996 was "Two Mothers For Zachary" which got Valerie an honor with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award in March of 1997.While promoting a TV role on Larry King Live in 1993, Valerie found herself defending another guest, lesbian mother Sharon Bottoms, from the comments of a conservative spokesperson who was "shoving her nose into other people's lives." Little did Bertinelli know that one day she'd play a woman a lot like Bottoms. "Two Mothers for Zachary" was very similar to Bottoms' story: A young mom loses custody of her son to her mother because of her sexual orientation. When Bertinelli was offered the role, she hesitated -- not because she'd portray a lesbian, but because she was tired of playing "mothers fighting to keep their children." She relented when she realized the movie was mainly about the relationship between a mother and daughter "both fighting for what they believe is right." Valerie played a lesbian mother fighting her own mother to keep custody of her son. That was a very important picture for her, and the network was very brave to do that kind of picture and she was very proud to have done that. Several facts were taken off the Lifetime "Intimate Portrait" of Valerie Bertinelli with added facts from "The Complete Directory To Prime Time Network Shows" by Tim Brooks. |
