Sydney Kells is a tough, fiesty private investigator who relocates to L.A. at the start of the series. Her tenacity earns her a job at a prestigious law firm, Fenton, Benton, & Sloane, despite their reservations about her ability to do a good job. On the surface, Sydney may seem a bit disorganized, (her apartment is a mess and she leaves pizza cheese on her reports), but she is a sharp PI. As a woman in a "man's job", she sometimes finds it necessary to put up a tough front, but she has a soft interior. Sydney has a crush on her boss, Matt. Sydney: [After Matt tells her that his boss won't like a woman working for the company] Matt, this is the 1990's, remember? Women can vote now. Women wear pants. And you know what? Not one of my girlfriends churns butter anymore. Matthew J. Keating 
Matt is a lawyer at the Fenton, Benton, and Sloane law firm, and Sydney's boss. He is stiff, anal, and a neat-freak. For the past five years, he has been in a relationship with a pushy, overbearing woman named Claire. Matt is attracted to Sydney, but his relationship with Claire keeps him from acting on those feelings. Sydney: You are such a baby... C'mon, Matt, you were crying at the Blue Collar. Matt: I was not crying at the Blue Collar. For your information, I was crying way before I got to the Blue Collar. Billy Kells 
Billy is Sydney's younger brother. He is a police officer, and the one who helped get Sydney her job at Fenton, Benton, and Sloane. Billy is a goofball, and is very insecure, especially when it comes to women. Billy is very attracted to Jill, and is always trying to convince her to go out with him. Billy: [To Sydney, who is upset over something that Matt did] Hit something. Trust me. you'll feel better. C'mon, here you go. [Billy puts a pillow in front of his stomach.] Just watch the face because it is classically handsome. Jill 
Jill is Sydney's best friend. She is a very prim, gentle woman who speaks with a Southern accent. She works as a fashion designer, and prefers the finer things in life. Jill: Guys with girlfriends are really bad news. Sydney: Like that really matters to you, Jill. What about that guy you were seeing down at the office? Jill: Sydney, Dan is a model, he's very sweet, and besides, he looks great in my designs. Don't you go dragging his name through the mud. Sydney: But he does have a girlfriend, right? Jill: Wrong... He has a wife. Ray 
Ray is the owner of the Blue Collar Bar, Sydney's favorite hangout. He and Sydney's father were close friends, and Sydney frequently turns to him for advice. Sydney: He had to spend the night last night... Ray: Oh? Really? Sydney: Relax, he had to. Ray: You forced him? Syd, I keep telling you- play hard to get. Cheesy 
Cheesy is a sleezy womanizer who hangs out at the Blue Collar. Though he spends most of his time hitting on women, he can be chivalrous, like when he lectured Sydney, Matt, and Billy for humiliating Jill. Sydney: My career is over, Ray. I'm nothing. I'm a zero. I'm a worthless speck of humiliated debris. Cheesy: Sounds like it's time to make my move. Perry 
Perry is a snitch who sometimes provides Sydney with helpful information. Most of the time, he just asks Sydney for money. Perry: Syd, I got some info for you... [Sydney gives him $20.] Jake's out. Sydney: I knew that. [Sydney takes back the money.] Perry: But there's more. Sydney: He's looking for me? Perry: Syd, could I like, borrow 20 bucks? The Whole Cast
